The upcoming reboot of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is taking inspiration from the infamous shared universe that met its demise six years ago. This fusion of the new and old is an interesting approach by James Gunn, the co-CEO of the studio. Gunn, who is known for his work on the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise, alongside James Mangold and Andy Muschietti, is set to bring a fresh perspective to the DCEU with their respective films. Mangold, the director of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”, will helm the highly anticipated “Swamp Thing”. The filmmaker has revealed that his vision for the movie was to create a standalone film that captures the essence of “Frankenstein”.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time the DCU has drawn inspiration from Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”, as the animated series “Creature Commandos” features Eric Frankenstein as a major character. Gunn’s inclination towards the darker, monstrous side of the DC universe echoes the abandoned Dark Universe by Universal Pictures. This time, however, Gunn and Mangold aim to deliver a captivating monster movie in the form of “Swamp Thing”, hoping to avoid the same fate as the ill-fated Dark Universe.
If only 2017’s “The Mummy” had been better received, we could have witnessed a plethora of spin-offs, including a Javier Bardem-starring “Frankenstein” film. While Universal has yet to realize this potential, Gunn and Mangold have taken the opportunity to offer their take on the classic monster genre with “Swamp Thing”. Let us hope that the DCU can break free from the curse that plagued the Dark Universe and find success in this new venture.
