iPhone 15 USB-C port images reportedly indicate Thunderbolt 4 speeds

The highly anticipated iPhone 15 series from Apple has been the subject of numerous rumors regarding its use of USB-C ports instead of Lightning, in response to new regulations in the EU. Recently, pictures of the alleged ports detached from the iPhones themselves have surfaced, leading some to believe that the iPhone 15 will also support Thunderbolt 4.

Speculation regarding Thunderbolt 4 support comes from the tech publication ChargerLAB, as reported by MacRumors. ChargerLAB has shared several images of USB-C printer circuit boards (PCBs) intended for the upcoming iPhones, highlighting what they believe to be a “retimer” integrated circuit (IC) on the PCB.

Retimer chips are commonly found in Thunderbolt 4 and USB-4 devices and are responsible for reconstructing signals and reducing signal jitter. ChargerLAB’s discovery of a potential retimer chip on the iPhone 15 PCB suggests that the USB-C port on Apple’s future devices will be capable of high data transfer speeds.

However, there are ongoing rumors suggesting that the USB-C port on the iPhone may have limitations when it comes to charging and data transfer with non-Apple certified accessories. The European Union (EU) has explicitly warned Apple against restricting the functionality of USB-C, so the presence of the alleged retimer chip could indicate that Apple intends to comply with the EU’s regulations and not go down the “Made for iPhone” (MFi) certification route.
