Apple has announced that its Communication Safety feature for iPhone, originally designed to protect children from viewing nude images over iMessage, will now expand to cover adult users as well as video content and other communication methods. This announcement was made during the WWDC event on Monday, and the protections will arrive with iOS 17 later this year. All image and video processing will occur on the device itself, ensuring that everything is kept private, even from Apple.
The Communication Safety in Messages feature, which uses on-device machine learning to automatically blur nude images in iMessages before a child can view them, is also expanding with iOS 17. This feature will now protect children from viewing or sharing photos containing nudity via AirDrop, new Contact Posters, FaceTime messages, and when browsing their image library using Photo Picker. In addition to still images, it can also scan video content for nudity. It is not yet confirmed if this feature will apply to live video content such as FaceTime video calls.
Currently, the Communication Safety tool is an opt-in feature within Apple’s existing Family Sharing system and can only be used for iMessages until the release of iOS 17 in the fall. If enabled, the feature detects if a child is sending or receiving images that could contain nudity, warns the child, and blurs the photograph before it appears on the minor’s device. The child is also presented with helpful resources and the option to message a trusted adult for additional support.
Adults will also benefit from similar protections against unsolicited nudes with the introduction of the “Sensitive Content Warning” feature in iOS 17. This new feature will warn users of any age if an image or video they are receiving contains nudity and offer them the choice to view it or not. Helpful guidance on staying safe will also be provided in the pop-up message.
