Instagram: Instagram testing ‘group tagging’ feature: What is it, how it will work and more

Instagram users who regularly share photos or Stories on the platform have often found it to be a tedious task when tagging multiple people in a set of photos or Stories. However, the Meta-owned company may have a solution to this problem.

According to Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, the platform is currently testing a new feature that will allow users to tag a group of people in a Story using just a single mention.

In a message on his Instagram Channel, Mosseri stated, “We’re currently testing a way to tag a group of people in a Story using a single mention. Once you create the group mention, it can be reused by any member of the group to automatically tag everyone in any new Stories.”
He further added, “So, for example, if you’re on a summer trip with friends, you can easily include everyone without the need to tag each person individually.”

How will it work?
While there is no official information on how exactly this feature will work, reports suggest that Instagram might allow users to create a group. When someone tags that group, the names of all the participants in that group will be automatically tagged as well.
Instagram’s DM safety feature

Recently, Instagram introduced a new feature aimed at protecting users from unwanted images and videos in Direct Messages (DMs). This feature, which was under testing in June, restricts users from sending DM requests to people they don’t follow.
Firstly, users will no longer be able to send an unlimited number of DM requests to non-followers and will be restricted to sending only one message. The conversation can continue only after the other person has accepted the chat request.
Secondly, DM invites are now limited to text-only, prohibiting users from sending images, videos, or voice notes to non-followers.
Cindy Southworth, head of Women’s Safety at Meta, stated, “We want people to feel confident and in control when they open their inbox. That’s why we’re testing new features that prevent people from receiving images, videos, or multiple messages from individuals they don’t follow until they’ve accepted the request to chat.”
