Instagram Exec Claims News and Politics Are Incompatible with Threads, Yet Acknowledges Their Inevitable Presence

The CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, acknowledges that news and politics will inevitably find their place on Threads. However, the company does not intend to actively promote them.

In a Threads post responding to Alex Heath from The Verge, Mosseri clarifies that Instagram’s goal is not to replace Twitter. Heath questioned how the news industry would adopt Threads and suggested that it needs the support of the industry to truly compete with Twitter.

Mosseri explains, “Our aim is to create a public space for communities on Instagram that have not fully embraced Twitter, and for users of Twitter (and other platforms) who are looking for a more positive conversational environment, without abandoning Twitter entirely.”

In an effort to decrease political content in its news feeds, Meta (formerly Facebook) has implemented certain measures. Recently, they announced that Canadians will be blocked from accessing news content on Facebook and Instagram as a response to Bill C-18.

Mosseri emphasizes that while politics and hard news are important, from the platform’s standpoint, the potential increase in engagement or revenue is not worth the negative scrutiny and integrity risks that come with them.
