‘Impossible 7’ Achieves Unprecedented Global Box Office Record

Paramount’s latest installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, titled “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” faced tough competition this weekend from “Barbenheimer.” Despite this, the film has successfully surpassed its massive production budget in just under two weeks, and even exceeded expectations. While “Dead Reckoning Part One” still has a ways to go before being declared a hit, it is steadily making progress despite a challenging release and the loss of large-format venues.

In domestic theaters, “Dead Reckoning Part One” experienced a significant decline this weekend due to the strong performances of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which claimed the top two spots with $155 million and $80 million, respectively. The film settled for third place, earning $19.5 million in its second weekend. Its total domestic earnings stand at a less-than-impressive $118 million. However, it is performing well in overseas markets, where it has grossed a total of $252 million. Globally, “Dead Reckoning Part One” has raked in $370 million.

During its extended five-day debut, the movie opened with approximately $230 million, which was seen as slightly disappointing considering its reported budget of $290 million. Expectations were high due to the massive success of star Tom Cruise’s previous film, “Top Gun: Maverick,” which earned nearly $1.5 billion at the global box office last year. Despite receiving excellent reviews, “Dead Reckoning Part One” has struggled to reach its full potential. However, Cruise’s movies typically have long legs, unlike the front-loaded blockbusters that dominate the current landscape. Nevertheless, with a 65% drop in domestic theaters during its second weekend, the film faces some challenges ahead.

In comparison to other films in the Mission: Impossible franchise, “Dead Reckoning Part One” still lags behind in terms of box office performance. It currently holds the title of the lowest-grossing entry in the long-running action series. The highest-grossing film in the franchise is “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” with $786 million worldwide, followed by “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” ($694 million) and “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” ($688 million). The first “Mission: Impossible” film grossed over $450 million worldwide in 1996, establishing Cruise as a box office star, while the sequel, “Mission: Impossible 2,” earned $550 million globally.

“Dead Reckoning Part One” stars Tom Cruise alongside Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Greg Tarzan Davis, Henry Czerny, and Shea Whigham. The film will be followed by a direct sequel in 2024. For more updates, you can watch Collider’s interview with director Christopher McQuarrie.
