How long does a full charge take?

Samsung has officially unveiled its latest foldable phones for 2023, and one device that stands out is the Galaxy Z Flip 5. This phone has seen significant improvements, including a larger 3.4-inch cover display, an upgraded hinge, and impressive processing hardware. However, when it comes to battery innovation, Samsung has been more cautious. So, has the charging speed of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 improved? Here’s everything you need to know.

Quick Answer:
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 should take approximately 80 minutes to fully charge. To achieve the fastest 25W charging speed, you will need a USB Power Delivery PPS-capable adapter. In terms of wireless charging, it may take 100 minutes or more. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 also supports reverse wireless charging, but at a slower 4.5W. This feature is only practical for topping up accessories in emergency situations.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 Charging Speed: What You Need to Know
Ryan Haines / Android Authority
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 supports Samsung’s Super Fast Charging technology, which is essentially USB Power Delivery PPS. This protocol is open for any manufacturer to adopt, and there are now many adapters available in the market that support it. You don’t need a Samsung-branded adapter to achieve the fastest charging speed for the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

According to Samsung, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 can handle up to 25W of charging power. However, this doesn’t mean that the phone will constantly draw 25W from the adapter. The fastest charging occurs when the phone’s battery is completely drained and gradually slows down over time. Samsung claims that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 can reach 50% charge within 30 minutes, but it will take more than double that time to fully charge to 100%. The maximum charging power for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 remains at 25W.

If you’re wondering how the charging setup of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 compares to previous generations, it’s quite straightforward. Samsung has kept the power-related specifications unchanged from last year’s Z Flip 4. The battery size hasn’t changed either, so we can expect similar charging times. However, if you’re upgrading from an earlier Samsung clamshell like the Galaxy Z Flip 3, you’ll notice a significant improvement in charging speed. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 could only handle a maximum charging power of 15W, which is significantly lower than the average for a premium Android smartphone.

When it comes to wireless charging, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 supports a maximum of 15W using the open Qi standard. This is also unchanged from last year’s model. However, it’s a notable improvement from the 10W supported by the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 also retains support for reverse wireless charging. With a maximum power output of 4.5W, it’s only practical for topping up accessories such as wireless earbuds.

How Long Does the Galaxy Z Flip 5 Take to Charge from 0 to 100?

We are currently conducting tests on the Galaxy Z Flip 5, but for now, we can make educated guesses about its charging speed. In our review of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, we found that the phone took anywhere between 75 and 80 minutes to fully charge. Therefore, as long as you use a 25W USB PD PPS charger, the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s battery should take just over an hour to go from empty to full.

It’s worth noting that charging times may vary depending on the room and battery temperatures. For optimal results, we recommend charging the Galaxy Z Flip 5 (or any smartphone) in cooler environments. Charging in warmer conditions can result in longer charging times and may negatively impact battery health in the long run. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 should fully charge within 80 minutes.

Like most high-end Android smartphones, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 does not come with a charging adapter in the box. If you don’t already own one, we suggest getting Samsung’s first-party 25W Super Fast Charging adapter. Alternatively, any other USB PD PPS-compliant charger will work just fine.

In terms of wireless charging, the previous-generation Galaxy Z Flip 4 took approximately 90-100 minutes to charge using a wireless charger. This should be similar for the Galaxy Z Flip 5, but we will update this article with the exact time once our tests are complete. Wireless charging pads equipped with a cooling fan will yield better results. Look for ones that support 15W Qi wireless charging, as many are limited to 7.5W or 10W.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 Charging Times vs. the Competition: How Does It Compare?
Ryan Haines / Android Authority
While the Galaxy Z Flip 5 doesn’t break any records for the fastest charging times in the smartphone industry, it holds its own in the US foldable market where Samsung faces minimal competition. Let’s take a quick look at how the Galaxy Z Flip 5 compares to its rivals like the Motorola Razr Plus in terms of charging performance.

Smartphone | Battery Capacity | Maximum Charging Power | Charging Time
Galaxy Z Flip 5 | 3,700 mAh | 25W | 80 mins (expected)
Motorola Razr Plus | 3,800 mAh | 30W | 80 mins
Oppo Find N2 Flip | 4,200 mAh | 67W SuperVOOC | 64 mins
OnePlus 11 | 5,000 mAh | 80W | 30 mins
Apple iPhone 14 Pro | 3,200 mAh | 23W | 100 mins

As seen in the table above, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 takes a reasonable amount of time to fully charge compared to most of its competitors. However, it lags behind in terms of fast charging innovation seen with brands like Oppo, OnePlus, and even Motorola. Huawei’s limited-release P50 Pocket clamshell also charges in under an hour with its 50W charger.

That being said, Samsung’s charging setup won’t hold you back unless you’ve experienced faster charging elsewhere in the Android smartphone market. We can only hope that Samsung pays more attention to the power setup of future generations of its clamshell devices.
