House in New Jersey Possibly Struck by Meteorite

According to a press release by the Hopewell Township Police Department, a metallic object believed to be a meteorite smashed through the roof of a building in Hopewell Township, New Jersey. The ranch-style home was occupied at the moment of the supposed meteorite strike, but no injuries were reported.

The object, described as oblong in shape (approximately 10 x 15 centimeters) and appearing metallic, penetrated the roof and ceiling before impacting the hardwood floor and coming to a rest.

Authorities are now working to confirm the meteoric nature of the object believed to be related to a current meteor shower called the Eta Aquiariids.

Documented cases of meteorites hitting buildings of even injuring people are extremely rare, but just one and half week weeks ago a homeowner in the German town of Elmshorn discovered that a stone had smashed through his roof. Experts from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) confirmed that the 7-centimeter large and 225-gram heavy stone is, in fact, a meteorite from outer space.

On November 30, 1954, Ms. Hewlett Hodges from Sylacauga in Alabama was hit by a rock from outer space, smashing through the roof when she was napping on her couch. It is the only documented case of a person hit and injured by a meteorite.

On October 9, 1992, a 13-kilogram heavy stony meteorite landed in the driveway of Knapp residence, Peekskill, New York, destroying the family’s 1980 Chevrolet Malibu.

A fragment of the Novato meteorite was found in October 2012 after Lisa Webber read a story about a bright fireball and sonic boom in the sky over Northern California. She recalled hearing a sound on her roof the night of the meteor and went outside and after noting an impact pit in one of the roof shingles located a 62-gram stone.

On February 15, 2013, a meteor exploded in the sky of the Russian town of Čeljabinsk. The resulting air blast caused widespread damage and injured more than 1,200 people. Fragments of this meteorite were later recovered from the bottom of a lake near the town.
