Here’s why I’m glad Nvidia is giving up on the RTX 4090 Ti

A trusted source has recently leaked information suggesting that Nvidia is abandoning its plans to release the RTX 4090 Ti. If this cancellation is indeed true, it may actually be a positive outcome for all parties involved. Let me explain why.

I’m afraid there won’t be RTX 4090 Ti anymore. Some low-grade AD103 and AD106 chips will be another versions of RTX 4070 and 4060.

This information comes from a reputable leaker named kopite7kimi on Twitter, known for reliable Nvidia rumors. However, it remains unconfirmed, as Nvidia has not officially acknowledged the existence of the RTX 4090 Ti. Despite that, there has been widespread speculation about the potential release of this card or even an RTX Titan Ada variant in recent months. Now, kopite7kimi suggests that Nvidia may have changed its plans.

The RTX 4090, while already a powerful GPU, does not fully utilize the AD102 GPU. This indicates the possibility of a higher-tier card that could unlock the remaining CUDA cores and further enhance performance.

Although the RTX 4090 boasts 16,384 cores, there is still potential for improvement, as the maximum core count is 18,432. Nvidia already has cards that utilize more of the chip, such as the RTX 6000, a workstation GPU with 18,176 cores and 48GB of VRAM. However, this is not a consumer card like the potential RTX 4090 Ti would have been.

Nvidia may have various reasons for not launching an RTX 4090 Ti. Firstly, it is not necessary for them to do so. They already hold the top position with the RTX 4090, and there is currently no competition from AMD in terms of offering a more powerful GPU. Additionally, there may not be sufficient demand for such a high-end GPU among consumers, especially considering its expected high price. Nvidia already has other uses for the nearly full AD102 GPU in AI workflows and professional applications.

Personally, I believe it might be beneficial if Nvidia abandoned the idea of the RTX 4090 Ti. Such a card would only cater to a limited number of users and could potentially drive up prices for future Nvidia GPUs, including mid-range options. This is something we want to avoid. Instead, Nvidia could focus on expanding its current generation with different versions of the RTX 4070 and RTX 4060. The RTX 4070 has been well-received, but the RTX 4060 and its Ti variants have faced criticism for limited VRAM and subpar performance-per-dollar. Furthermore, there are other GPUs I would like to see, such as the RTX 4080 Ti or the budget-friendly RTX 4050.

It is possible that Nvidia might still surprise us with the release of the RTX Titan Ada or the RTX 4090 Ti before 2025 when the next generation of GPUs is rumored to arrive. However, if the RTX 4090 remains the most powerful consumer GPU until then, it may be for the best, unless AMD poses a significant challenge to Nvidia’s dominance.
