Greta Gerwig Clarifies the Reason Behind Casting Dancers as Background Actors

In the enchanting world of Barbie, where life is both plastic and fantastic, creating that perfect illusion requires hard work. Director Greta Gerwig, known for her work on “Lady Bird,” recently shared her vision for the Barbie universe in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Gerwig discussed the decisions she made to bring the world of Barbie and Ken, played by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling respectively, to life and make it as vibrant as possible.

“I wanted the world of Barbie Land to feel heightened, but not like a sketch. In soundstage musicals like ‘Oklahoma!’ or ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ there’s a unique quality to how people move. So all the Barbies and Kens you see in dance sequences hold themselves differently. Our choreographer pointed out that dancers have a distinct way of carrying themselves, different from regular people. So, in conceiving Barbie Land, it’s like a soundstage musical.”

Gerwig wanted every aspect of Barbie Land to be vibrant, and one way she achieved this was by hiring background actors who were also dancers. She observed that even when dancers are standing still in musicals, there is a certain energy and movement in their presence.

What to Expect from Barbie

The upcoming film Barbie will offer a clear divide in its narrative. In one part, viewers will witness the carefree lives of Barbie and Ken in Barbie Land, a whimsical paradise. But eventually, two of these live-action dolls will discover that their reality is a fantasy and venture into the real world. There, they will encounter humans and the company behind their creation, Mattel. The collision between these two worlds and the consequences of Barbie’s revelation will unfold in theaters in a few weeks.

The star-studded cast of Barbie includes Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Hari Nef, John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Ncuti Gatwa, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, America Ferrera, Emerald Fennell, and singer-songwriter Dua Lipa.

Barbie, or as some might prefer to call her, Barbenheimer, will make her theatrical debut on July 21.
