Tumblr is creating a TikTok-inspired feed to expand its user base

In an exciting move, Tumblr is set to implement algorithmic recommendations into users’ feeds, taking inspiration from TikTok. The company acknowledges its current deficiencies and aims to address them through a major platform revamp. In a candid statement, Tumblr admits that its 15-year-old brand comes with preconceived notions that hinder user experience.

While specific details about the upcoming changes are not provided, Tumblr drops hints about its plans. The company’s primary objective is to deliver exceptional content each time the app is opened, challenging the outdated nature of its “following” feed. To achieve this, Tumblr, owned by Automattic, is devoted to enhancing its algorithmic ranking capabilities across all feeds and assisting users in discovering vibrant communities on the platform. Additionally, the company recognizes the need to create a more welcoming environment for new creators by improving the functionality of replies and reblogs.

Tumblr aims to combat the intimidating nature of being a new creator on the platform, where engagement and feedback are often lacking. The current decision to only display content from followed blogs perpetuates a cycle in which popular blogs receive more visibility, leaving new creators in the shadows. By implementing algorithmic recommendations, creator-friendly features, and refined commenting tools, Tumblr hopes to emulate the success of TikTok and Instagram, aligning with users’ expectations for social platforms in 2023.

This redesign is not the only effort made by Automattic to rejuvenate Tumblr since its acquisition. The company has explored subscriptions and other paid features, such as Post+. However, this introduction faced backlash from long-time users. Recently, Tumblr began offering “completely useless” items to users, following the controversial launch of Twitter’s paid verification by Elon Musk.

Overall, the impending changes to Tumblr’s platform signify a significant shift in its dynamics and bring it up to par with contemporary social media expectations.
