Grammys reveals a promising AI ban that could delight countless music enthusiasts

Grammys has made a significant announcement regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The Recording Academy wants to ensure that only human creators are eligible for the Grammy Awards. This decision comes as a response to the rapid spread of AI technology in the music industry. Since the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI in December, AI applications have emerged that can generate human-like dialogue, create avatars, and even write songs and articles. These advancements in AI threaten to replace humans in various roles.

According to the updated rulebook, works that lack human authorship are not eligible in any Grammy categories. However, music created with the assistance of AI may still qualify in certain categories. The academy now requires music creators to contribute at least 20% to an album to earn a nomination. Previously, anyone involved in the production, songwriting, engineering, or featuring on an album could receive a nomination for album of the year, regardless of their level of involvement.

The use of AI is not just a concern in the music industry. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) are also grappling with the implications of AI in screenwriting and acting. The WGA is seeking to limit the use of AI in screenwriting, while SAG actors want control over the use of their digital personas and fair compensation.

It’s worth noting that the WGA writers recently went on strike in May, with AI usage being one of the contentious issues that still need resolution between the writers and studios.

In conclusion, the music industry, along with the creative fields of screenwriting and acting, is facing the challenge of incorporating AI technology while also ensuring the recognition and compensation of human creators. These developments highlight the ongoing discussion around the impact of AI in various industries.
