GPU sales figures show that AMD is its own greatest enemy

Luke Larsen / Digital Trends

AMD’s GPUs have been performing remarkably well in the market, often surpassing sales of Nvidia’s top graphics cards. However, a closer look reveals an interesting trend: AMD seems to be competing with itself. According to sales data from German retailer Mindfactory, while Nvidia enthusiasts have migrated to the RTX 40-series, many AMD fans are still sticking with the previous generation of cards. This creates a challenging shopping experience for consumers due to the abundance of options.

At the top of the sales list is Nvidia’s RTX 4070, which offers a compelling combination of performance and price. It has outsold AMD’s RX 6700 XT and RX 6800 XT. The budget-friendly RX 6600 follows closely behind, along with the high-end RTX 4090. Surprisingly, it’s only after these options that we see AMD’s flagship RX 7900 XTX, which has sold the same number of units as the previous-generation RX 6950 XT.

This observation poses an interesting question: even though AMD’s current-gen cards are selling well, the competitiveness in price and performance of the previous generation makes it challenging for the new generation to make a mark. The RX 6950 XT, for example, is priced $350 to $400 less than the RX 7900 XTX. Despite slightly inferior ray tracing performance, the price advantage of the previous-gen card makes it a compelling choice. This is evident in the sales numbers, as even the budget-friendly RX 7600 couldn’t outsell its last-gen counterpart, with only 40 units sold.

Although Nvidia’s current-gen GPUs are selling in smaller numbers, they still have a presence in the market. The RTX 4060 Ti, for instance, has sold 160 units, despite not offering the best performance per dollar among Nvidia’s lineup. Additionally, AMD’s limited RDNA 3 offerings could contribute to its reduced presence in the sales figures. Meanwhile, Intel’s Arc Alchemist GPUs continue to have negligible sales.

It’s important to note that this analysis is based on a small sample of the GPU market and the situation in the U.S. may differ. However, it is evident that AMD’s previous-gen cards often offer better value. It’s possible that AMD is strategically clearing inventory of its last-gen cards before adjusting prices for the current-gen offerings, or it may choose to maintain the $1,000 price tag for its flagship card. Nevertheless, it might be challenging to generate sales for the new flagship card when its previous-gen counterpart remains a strong competitor at a highly competitive price.
