God of War Ragnarök’s Photo Mode Now Live, Lets You Change Facial Expressions for Kratos, Atreus, Others

The highly anticipated photo mode for God of War Ragnarök has finally arrived. Santa Monica Studio, the game’s developer, confirmed the release of version 3.00, which includes the long-awaited in-game photo capture feature. Similar to its predecessor, God of War (2018), this feature becomes available shortly after the game’s launch and allows players to manipulate facial expressions for certain characters in a scene. This includes main characters like Kratos, Atreus, Freya, Brok, Sindri, Tyr, Angrboda, Thor, and Thrúd. Additionally, players have the ability to hide both main and side characters from appearing within the frame. To access the photo mode, simply press the ‘Square’ button in the options menu.

Alongside these exciting features, the photo mode also provides a range of camera options. Players can adjust the field of view, focal length, and depth of field, as well as experiment with various filters. Just like other AAA titles, God of War Ragnarök allows players to apply pre-designed borders and move logos for a personal touch. On the PlayStation blog, QA Lead Tim Ward shares helpful tips for aspiring in-game photographers. He suggests adjusting the Filter Intensity, Vibrance, and Saturation to achieve a wider range of colors with filters. The game also facilitates vertical shots by allowing players to rotate the camera 90 degrees, providing more headroom.

In addition to addressing underlying issues, this new photo mode update marks one of the final significant additions to God of War Ragnarök. In a spoilercast discussion last month, game director Eric Williams dismissed the possibility of future downloadable content, explaining, “I don’t know, man. That game is big. I think we put everything we had into it, so I wouldn’t count on it.” The recent version 3.00 update brings numerous improvements to the game, fixing actions that were previously unresponsive and improving the overall progression of the story. Additionally, the PS4 version received performance enhancements, resulting in faster load times for enemies and environmental assets.

Last month, PlayStation announced that God of War Ragnarök achieved the status of the fastest-selling first-party launch title in the publisher’s history, with 5.1 million copies sold in its launch week. The game has also received extensive recognition, with nominations in 10 categories for the upcoming The Game Awards, including a prestigious Game of the Year nomination alongside acclaimed titles like Elden Ring and PlayStation exclusive Horizon Forbidden West.

God of War Ragnarök’s photo mode is now available on both PS4 and PS5.
