Google is developing a feature called Android Upgrade Invite that will provide a comprehensive changelog of the pending update. However, this changelog will differ from the current text-based ones.
Android Upgrade Invite Feature
Unlike the current updates where users receive a text-based changelog before installing an update, the new approach will involve a series of screens showcasing the features of the pending update. These screens will also include a prompt to perform the update. This way, users can gain a better understanding of the changes the update will bring to their smartphones and assess the functionality of their devices.
“Upgrade Invite is a user flow that showcases the key new features included in the current available major Android OS upgrade. The flow is intended to help convince users to upgrade their device to the latest OS version,” explains an Android landing page.
When a device has a pending OS upgrade, users will receive a push notification displaying the new features and inviting them to perform the upgrade.
Users also have the ability to customize the Upgrade Invite experience by removing irrelevant features, updating the language in the text blocks, and modifying the animations, colors, and fonts to align with their smartphone’s brand.
Android Upgrade Invite Limitation
This feature will be available to Android OEMs and requires support for Google Mobile Services. However, it is only applicable to “major” Android OS versions. This means that OEMs who provide updates to their own software skin without upgrading the underlying Android version will not be able to utilize this feature. Nevertheless, it may be possible for OEMs to develop a similar feature for their pending updates.
