Google urges work-from-home due to wildfire smoke

Google has instructed its employees in the northeast region of the United States to work from home, following the thick smoke from hundreds of wildfires in Canada. The air quality in New York City, which on Wednesday was the worst of any city across the globe, continues to deteriorate as fires in eastern Canada rage on. Google advised its workers to stay indoors and avoid outdoor air as much as possible. Employees in Detroit, Washington, D.C., Reston, Pittsburgh, and Raleigh-Durham also received advisory notices, alongside their counterparts in Toronto and Waterloo in Canada. Prior to this situation, Google had already allowed remote work for up to two days a week since the pandemic began. As a company that has spent years developing cloud-based productivity tools, Google is well-equipped to handle remote workforce scenarios. The air quality is expected to improve slightly overnight but worsen again on Thursday afternoon and evening in New York City. Mayor Eric Adams has suggested limiting outdoor activity as much as possible and asking those with respiratory issues, children, and older adults to stay indoors.
