Google Reinstates Employees Previously Fired for Voicing Concerns about AI and Search Development

Google has reinstated the jobs of workers who were previously fired for speaking out about poor working conditions, specifically related to artificial intelligence (AI) Search products. The employees have been given back pay as well.
The Alphabet Workers Union reported on Twitter that a group of six employees, who were responsible for rating Google AI chatbot, were laid off due to their complaints about working conditions. This occurred on May 31.
According to a report by The Washington Post, the chatbot trainers alleged that their termination was a result of their advocacy for better pay and working conditions. They claimed that low pay and unreasonable deadlines hindered their ability to perform their jobs effectively and ensure that the chatbots did not cause harm.
The workers filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, asserting that they were illegally fired by Appen, a company that supplies contract workers to major tech firms. They also stated that they had spent nearly a year advocating for improved pay and working conditions.
The Alphabet Workers Union has now confirmed that the workers’ jobs have been reinstated with back pay. An email from RaterLabs, a subsidiary of Appen, explained the decision: “Based on our continuing consideration and review of our business needs, we have determined that some recent reductions of our workforce were not necessary and can be reversed. Consequently, we are pleased to offer you the option to return to work with RaterLabs.”
In previous reports, employees had expressed concerns about Bard, an AI chatbot, referring to it as “a pathological liar.” They had also warned against launching it, as testers found that it provided inaccurate and potentially dangerous information. One employee even described Bard’s responses as “cringe-worthy.”
