Gollum’s Failure Forces Daedalic to Close Studio, Focus Solely on Publishing

The game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was always an unconventional project, from its choice of protagonist to the developer’s lack of prior experience in this genre. Daedalic Entertainment, based in Hamburg, gained recognition for its point-and-click adventure games like Deponia.

However, with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, they ventured into the realm of stealth action/adventure games. Unfortunately, Gollum experienced several delays, shifting its release date from 2021 to 2022, and finally reaching the market in late May 2023 with mixed reviews. Ule Lopez, in Wccftech’s analysis, stated:

[…] if you’re a player seeking stunning visuals, deep mechanics, high replay value, and stable performance, this experience may leave much to be desired. Consequently, I can only cautiously recommend it to those outside of the mentioned niches.

The day after The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s release, it was revealed that Daedalic Entertainment had already begun planning another game based on Tolkien’s beloved fantasy books. The German government, which had contributed to the funding, disclosed the following description:

Daedalic is embarking on a new project that will transport players into a lush world teeming with mythical creatures and magic. It tells a previously untold story from a unique character’s perspective. As players explore new regions and utilize their role and abilities, they will have the opportunity to influence the course of events and alter the fate of the world. This project is intended for worldwide fantasy story and 3D action-adventure genre enthusiasts.

However, the game’s incredibly low sales had a devastating impact on Daedalic Entertainment. The studio announced the closure of its development division, which includes the team responsible for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. Consequently, this new project will never come to fruition.

In the future, Daedalic Entertainment will shift its focus to game publishing. The company was acquired by Nacon for an estimated $60 million last year.

Fortunately, fans of The Lord of the Rings can still anticipate numerous other projects, including the upcoming survival crafting game Return to Moria (scheduled for release this fall) and projects in development by Wētā Workshop and Amazon (the latter being an MMO).
