Houston is set to unveil a remarkable piece of public art that has been hailed as “the world’s largest sundial” while also serving as a solar power generator for the community. The magnificent Arco del Tiempo (Arch of Time), designed by Berlin-based artist and architect Riccardo Mariano, will be installed in Houston’s East End district in 2024.
Towering at a height of 100 feet, this structure offers multiple functions. It acts as a time measuring device, a mesmerizing light display, and a solar installation that generates an impressive 400,000 kWh of power annually. The sculpture has been ingeniously designed to beam sunlight onto the surface of Houston’s Guadalupe Plaza Park, with the patterns of light shifting in accordance with the sun’s position.
Furthermore, solar panels integrated into the sculpture’s south-facing exterior will produce electricity equivalent to the energy demands of 40 local homes. This sustainable energy will offset more than 100% of the power consumption of the nearby Talento Bilingüe de Houston, a city-owned Latino cultural hub for performing arts in the East End.
The non-profit organization, Land Art Generator, which played a vital role in bringing this project to life, describes the artwork as more than just a sculpture. It will function as a net-positive contributor to combat the climate crisis while blending functionality and art.
Riccardo Mariano himself views his creation as “a practical example to illustrate the movement of the earth around the sun in a playful way.” He also envisions the space within the arch being utilized for public events at night.
Local mayor Sylvester Turner commented, stating that “This unique artwork is more than a sculpture. It is a renewable energy power plant. It is a monument to a new era of energy.” He further emphasized Houston’s position as a pioneer in energy innovation and the transition towards renewable sources.
