Freeform Cancels ‘Solo Inebriated Woman’ and ‘The Vigilant Gaze’

Freeform is undergoing a major shakeup with the official cancellation of two of their original series, “Single Drunk Female” and “The Watchful Eye”. “Single Drunk Female” recently aired its second season on the Disney-owned network in April, while “The Watchful Eye” debuted its first season in January.

Unfortunately, “Single Drunk Female” will not be returning for a third season. The series follows Sofia Black-D’Elia’s character, Sam, a 20-something alcoholic who hits rock bottom and moves back in with her mother, Carol (played by Ally Sheedy), in Boston. Sam tries to turn her life around by getting sober and making positive changes, but faces challenges along the way. Season 2 shows Sam a year and a half into her sobriety, with things finally looking up for her in terms of a new job and a potential love interest. However, life continues to throw curveballs her way, forcing her to navigate change and uncertainty.

“Single Drunk Female” also stars Rebecca Henderson, Sasha Compère, Lily Mae Harrington, and Garrick Bernard. The series was created by Simone Finch, who drew inspiration from her own personal struggles with addiction. Despite some flaws, the show received praise from both fans and critics for its sharp writing and humor, leading to a swift renewal for a second season. Unfortunately, the series will now conclude on a bittersweet note, with unresolved storylines such as Brit’s marriage and James’s relapse.

On the other hand, “The Watchful Eye” was a contemporary Hitchcockian thriller that revolved around Elena Santos, played by Mariel Molino. Elena becomes the live-in nanny for a wealthy Manhattan family in the mysterious apartment building, The Greybourne. As Elena settles into her new role, she discovers the complex dynamics and dark secrets that exist among the building’s residents. Elena herself harbors her own secrets, which help her navigate the challenges and survive in her new environment. Season 1 of the series focused on the mystery surrounding the death of Matthew’s wife, who apparently jumped from her balcony, but other residents may have had motives to harm her.

“The Watchful Eye” also stars Warren Christie, Amy Acker, Jon Ecker, Aliyah Royale, Lex Lumpkin, Henry Joseph Samiri, and Kelly Bishop. The series was created and produced by Julia Durk in collaboration with Ryan Seacrest Productions and ABC Signature, with Emily Fox serving as showrunner. While “The Watchful Eye” didn’t receive as much acclaim as “Single Drunk Female”, its cancellation seems to be more of a strategic decision rather than a reflection of its quality.

Moving forward, Freeform still has a few original series in its lineup, but it will soon bid farewell to “Grown-ish”, which is entering its sixth and final season. However, the network will welcome new content in the form of “Praise Petey”, an animated comedy from former “SNL” head writer Anna Drezen, set to premiere in July. Additionally, “Cruel Summer” continues to thrive in terms of viewership.

For those who missed out on “Single Drunk Female” and “The Watchful Eye”, both shows can be streamed in their entirety on Hulu.
