A new Pokémon TCG set called Ruler of the Black Flame, featuring Charizard, Finizen, and more, is set to release in Japan.

We are starting to receive more information and card reveals about the next set in the Scarlet & Violet era of the Pokémon TCG. The Charizard-themed expansion, Ruler of the Black Flame, will be released in Japan on July 28th and will include 108 cards (not including Secret Rare cards). This expansion will introduce Tera Pokémon with a unique Tera type that differs from their standard typing. This will be especially noticeable with the Dark-type Tera Charizard ex, but also with the Fire-type Tera Eiscue ex and Electric-type Tera Tyranitar ex. Additionally, it has been confirmed that this set will be part of the Scarlet & Violet – Obsidian Flames expansion, which will be released in English in August 2023. Ruler of the Black Flame is expected to combine with cards from the upcoming Japanese ex Starter Decks, as well as leftover cards from other Japanese sets this year. Today, let’s take a closer look at the Finizen line.

The Finizen line is represented with two cards in this set, one by kadama and one by Kouki Saitou. It evolves into Palafin, which is depicted in its Zero Form on a holographic rare card illustrated by Souichirou Gunjima.

Let’s explore these new Pokémon through their Dex entries. Finizen’s entry states:

It enjoys playing with other Finizens using the water ring on its tail. It uses ultrasonic waves to sense the emotions of other living creatures.

Its water ring is made from a mixture of seawater and a sticky fluid that Finizen secretes from its blowhole.

And here’s the Dex entry for Zero Form Palafin:

This Pokémon changes its appearance when it hears its allies calling for help. Palafin never reveals its moment of transformation to anyone.

Its physical capabilities are the same as those of Finizen, but when its allies are in danger, it transforms and powers itself up.

Japanese sets often provide early insights into what English-language sets may include, so be sure to keep an eye on our coverage. Stay tuned for previews of Scarlet & Violet cards and updates on everything related to the Pokémon TCG right here at Bleeding Cool.
