Final Episodes of Animated Series Reach Their Peak

Human Resources Season 1 of the animated series may have felt like flipping through a teenager’s doodles on a notebook, relying heavily on repetitive dick jokes and scatological humor. However, Season 2 is a significant improvement as it finally allows the show to wield its full potential. The series follows the daily routine of Hormone Monsters, whose lives and jobs reflect human behavior. Featuring a star-studded voice cast, including Aidy Bryant, Randall Park, Keke Palmer, David Thewlis, Maya Rudolph, Nick Kroll, Hugh Jackman, and Miley Cyrus, the show explores its mythology much more thoroughly, creating running gags, long-running jokes, season-wide arcs, and even an episode that flips the narrative to tell the story from different points of view.

Moreover, Season 2 delves deeper into the psyche of its characters and humanizes them in unique ways. We see an inner growth arc for Rochelle (Palmer), while Pete’s (Park) obsession with rules gets better fleshed out. Connie (Rudolph) and Maury (Kroll) still deliver sex-maniac storylines but now have worries about parenthood, expectations from their child, and even question their sexual impulses.

Additionally, the show balances the perfect amount of meta-humor by cleverly spacing out jokes related to Big Mouth storylines, the streaming platform, and the star-studded cast. This subverts the viewer’s expectations of the involvement of big Hollywood names, with some voices sticking around longer than expected and others getting discards faster. The series also makes great use of its almost 30-minute runtime per episode, which is rare for an animated series, and is bound to keep viewers cackling with its great one-liners and hilarious punchlines, all while conveying heartfelt and amusing narratives.

Overall, Human Resources Season 2 is an elevated form of humor that proves that comedy does not always need to be highbrow. It can be inclusive of sex jokes, bathroom humor, and nonsense while creatively using set-ups, callbacks, and everything else that makes comedy great. With a rating of A-, Human Resources Season 2 is undoubtedly a must-watch series, which you can stream on Netflix today.
