Update 4:25 PM: Alliance Broadband users are now able to access Steam again, suggesting that the previous ban was likely a mistake.
Original article follows.
Reports have emerged stating that a prominent Indian internet service provider (ISP), Alliance Broadband, has blocked access to the popular gaming platform Steam.
A user of Alliance Broadband, located in West Bengal, expressed their dissatisfaction with the ban on Twitter. When attempting to visit Steam’s website, they were redirected to a page stating, “As per government directive, the site has been blocked.” Another user also mentioned that the Steam program failed to open the inventory section.
According to the Alliance Broadband user, the ISP informed them that the ban on Steam was in compliance with a government directive, suggesting that more websites may also be blocked in the future.
ISP Alliance Broadband (Kolkata) is not allowing access to Steam profile, inventory and community.
When trying from browser, I am getting redirected to this ominous landing page.
Is Steam getting banned in India? What kind of stupidity is this? pic.twitter.com/VQa16BUSIz

Yup, can confirm. I’m on Alliance. The app also doesn’t open up the inventory.
Talked with Alliance through my local ISP provider since I’m on good terms with them, govt. directive apparently. pic.twitter.com/HYCZUPUEKC

It is important to note that reports of Steam’s ban have only come from Alliance Broadband thus far. It is possible that this action was taken in error, especially considering Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s recent mention of a ban on certain types of online games in India. The ban specifically targets gambling apps and games that are harmful or addictive. It is likely that Steam was mistakenly categorized within one of these groups. However, Alliance Broadband stated that they “received a request to block multiple websites, and Steam was among them.”
IGN India has reached out to Alliance Broadband, Steam, and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology for their responses. We will provide updates to this article as soon as we receive their comments.
