Europe Possibly Shared by Humans and Neanderthals 54,000 Years Ago According to Science

Grotte Mandrin in southern France and Ksar Akil in Lebanon are both sites of immense archaeological interest. The former is not a vast cave, but rather a deep overhang that offered protection to Neanderthals and other creatures that occupied it for thousands of years. The site features sophisticated stone tools that were systematically produced, with technical methods similar to those used by Homo sapiens in Lebanon’s Ksar Akil. French archaeologist Ludovic Slimak posits that human migrations from the Near East began around 10,000 years earlier than previously thought and occurred in three waves. The similarities between the findings at Grotte Mandrin and those in the Near East suggest that these tools were spread during these waves of migration. The tools from Grotte Mandrin are characterized by their standardized technical development, in contrast to Neanderthal tools. A study done by Slimak and his colleagues used local flint to create replicas of the various points, which showed that the smaller ones were only effective when delivered with the velocity of a bow and arrow, though the next evidence of European archery doesn’t appear until much later. These findings, coupled with the tooth found on the site, suggest that the Neanderthal population of the time might have included a group that adapted to produce these sophisticated implements. This could have implications for our theories about how Neanderthals adapted to the arrival of humans and why they disappeared.
