‘Enchanted Melodies’ Showcases Brand New Songs by Alan Menken

New songs have been revealed for Apple’s upcoming animated film, “Spellbound.” According to a report by Deadline, the musical film, directed by Vicky Jenson of “Shrek” fame, will feature multiple original songs composed by Alan Menken and written by Glen Slater.

During a Work in Progress presentation at the Annecy International Film Festival, Jenson excitedly shared that the audience would be the first to hear several songs from the film. She mentioned that most of the songs are in the demo stage and feature the final singers, including Rachel Zegler. Interestingly, some of the songs will be sung by Alan Menken himself, a rare treat for listeners.

Menken and Slater previously collaborated on Disney’s “Tangled” and their hit song, “I See the Light,” received critical acclaim and awards recognition. Jenson expressed her enthusiasm for having Menken and Slater on board for the new film, emphasizing that the songs are completely original and a refreshing departure from the nostalgic wave in recent movie soundtracks.

One of the revealed songs is a ballad, described by Deadline as having the same emotional pull as “I See the Light.” The song is played during the opening scene of the film, where the princess, voiced by Zegler, laments her previous life with her transformed parents, portrayed by Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem.

Aside from the songs, Jenson expressed her admiration for Zegler’s talent, mentioning that they discovered her videos on YouTube before Steven Spielberg cast her in “West Side Story.” Jenson praised Zegler’s fantastic performance, delightful personality, and professionalism.

“Spellbound” is a musical animation that revolves around a princess from the fictional kingdom of Lambria. She embarks on a quest to reverse a spell that turned her parents into monsters. The film draws inspiration from the architecture of ancient Spain, featuring Moorish arches and domed rooftops. In addition to Zegler, Kidman, and Bardem, the cast includes John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, and Nathan Lane. The production took place primarily in Skydance Animation’s Madrid unit, with Apple set to distribute the film.

The release date for “Spellbound” has not been announced yet. In the meantime, audiences can watch the trailer for Skydance Animation’s first animated film, “Blush.”
