Disney+ CEO Bob Iger Acknowledges Impact on MCU’s Quality Due to Disney+

In an exciting development for the Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger has signed a contract extension, securing his leadership position until 2026. One of Iger’s primary tasks will be to address the challenges faced by Disney+ and the negative impact of the company’s content generation for its streaming service. In an interview with CNBC, Iger acknowledged that the company would slow down its production of movies and TV series for its Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm franchises. This decision comes as a cost-cutting measure, with many recent releases underperforming at the global box office despite significant investments. All Disney-backed films released this year have had disappointing opening weekend returns, especially those from the Marvel franchise.

One film that suffered a notable decline in ticket sales was “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” the 31st installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It not only experienced a steep drop in sales from its first to second weekend but also received poor reviews, particularly regarding its visual effects. These effects were considered of lower quality compared to previous films in the franchise, which was particularly jarring for a movie set in a fictitious world like the Quantum Realm.

Reports suggest that the visual effects team had been split between “Quantumania” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” with priority given to completing the CGI for the latter film due to its earlier release date. This resource allocation decision, made by then-MCU executive Victoria Alonso, faced challenges due to the constraints imposed by the pandemic. Additionally, with an influx of Marvel productions for cinema and television, the output faced criticism for not meeting the standards expected of the franchise.

On a broader scale, the surge in projects and lack of sufficient staff became apparent even before the pandemic. Prior to the health crisis, Marvel Studios released 23 feature films over 11 years before expanding into television. The television series, which carried similar budgets to their cinematic counterparts, debuted on Disney+ in 2020. Since then, nine films and nine television series have been produced and released, significantly increasing the output from an average of two projects per year to six. However, the law of diminishing returns soon took effect, as evidenced by the lower box office returns for recent releases like “Quantumania,” “Wakanda Forever,” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

Bob Iger highlighted the strain placed on Marvel Studios by this increased workload, particularly in their transition to television production. “Not only did they increase their movie output but they ended up making a number of television series, and frankly, it diluted focus and attention, and that is more the cause [of the poor box office] than anything else,” Iger explained.

Additionally, Pixar, once celebrated as the pinnacle of animation, faced a decline in box office success. Since 2020, several Pixar films, including “Luca,” “Turning Red,” and “Soul,” were released directly on Disney+, reducing the urgency for families to visit theaters. Combined with shorter theatrical release windows, this had a significant impact on box office returns and audience expectations. Recent releases like “Lightyear” and “Elemental” didn’t fare much better, resulting in financial losses for the studio.

While dealing with other challenges within the company, such as potential strikes from the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Bob Iger has demonstrated an understanding of the creative issues faced by Disney. It now falls on him to address and remedy these concerns.
