The recent addition of 2008’s The Incredible Hulk to Disney Plus has sparked speculation about the ownership of the Hulk character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the rights to the character still belong to Universal Pictures, despite the film’s availability on the streaming platform.

The Incredible Hulk, directed by Louis Letterier, was the second film released in the MCU. At the time, Marvel partnered with Universal for distribution, as they did not have full control over all their characters. The film introduced Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, who transforms into the Hulk. Although the film received moderate success, Mark Ruffalo later took over the role in the Avengers films.

While the Hulk and General Ross have appeared in other MCU films, such as Thor: Ragnarok and Captain America: Civil War, the rights to the Hulk character remain with Universal. However, both characters are set to appear in the upcoming Captain American: Brave New World, where Harrison Ford will portray General Ross.

Does that mean Marvel rightfully owns the Hulk now?

The availability of The Incredible Hulk on Disney Plus does not indicate a change in ownership. Universal’s rights to the film expired after 15 years, allowing it to be included on the streaming service. However, Universal still holds the character rights, similar to Sony’s ownership of Spider-Man in collaboration with Marvel.

Marvel has previously produced standalone Hulk movies, such as The Incredible Hulk in 2008. However, these films were not as financially successful, and making a new Hulk movie is dependent on Universal’s decision to distribute it. For now, Marvel is focusing on the Hulk as a supporting character in other films.

Despite the limitations on solo Hulk movies, Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of Bruce Banner will continue in the MCU. Fans can look forward to his appearance in the upcoming She-Hulk series.
