Did Jocelyn Seek Revenge Against Tedros?

HBO’s controversial show, The Idol, concluded with an episode that left viewers unsatisfied yet presented some of the show’s best moments. The main character, Tedros, played by Abel Tesfaye, finally falls from his pedestal as a cult leader, delivering a powerful performance that showcases his pathetic and broken state. He begs for Jocelyn’s (played by Lily-Rose Depp) acceptance, adding an interesting dynamic to their relationship.

The finale, titled “Jocelyn Forever,” sees the female lead finally breaking free from the toxic influence of Tedros, only to bring him back into her life in a somewhat empowering twist. This begs the question: how did this happen, and what does it mean for Jocelyn’s character development? To fully comprehend the finale, it is necessary to analyze the entire series, as painful as it may be.

Tedros’ influence over Jocelyn begins in the first episode, “Pop Tarts and Rat Tales.” Jocelyn, a pop star resembling Britney Spears, is at a vulnerable point in her life, dealing with the death of her mother and a public mental breakdown. She visits a nightclub in Hollywood and catches the attention of Tedros, who owns the club. Tedros quickly infiltrates Jocelyn’s life, moving his cult compound into her mansion. Despite his abusive behavior towards Jocelyn and her staff, she see him as someone who can help her find her voice, which raises concerns among her team.

However, Tedros is not who he appears to be. It is revealed that Dyanne, one of Jocelyn’s dancers, was working with him all along, luring Jocelyn into his web. They were not only involved romantically but also had a manipulative plan to take over Jocelyn’s career. Jocelyn uncovers this in a conversation with Chloe and later confronts Dyanne about the record label’s request for her to sing Jocelyn’s former comeback single.

In the finale, Jocelyn manages to get rid of Tedros, but he doesn’t go down without a fight. He falsely accuses Jocelyn’s ex-boyfriend, Rob, of rape to force her to leave him. However, Jocelyn is aware of Tedros’ true nature and tries various methods to get him to leave, including offering him money. When these attempts fail, Chaim, Jocelyn’s manager, arranges for Tedros to be physically removed from the mansion. Jocelyn’s tour manager, Finkelstein, and a journalist named Talia also expose Tedros, leading to his downfall.

Despite Tedros’ defeat, Jocelyn is not entirely free from control. She finds herself once again following the orders of industry executives, raising concerns about her continued lack of freedom. Meanwhile, Tedros, now using his real name, Mauricio Jackson, sneaks into Jocelyn’s concert using a VIP pass. This act further diminishes his power, as he realizes he is just an ordinary man. When he confronts Jocelyn, she reveals that she manipulated him into believing she was an abuse victim who craved such mistreatment. This revelation brings closure to their tumultuous relationship.

As Mauricio retreats into the shadows, Jocelyn takes the stage, introducing him as the man who saved her life. While her managers are angered by this, her fans cheer, reaffirming Jocelyn as the true idol. The finale ends on a perplexing note, suggesting that Jocelyn was not just a victim but also complicit in her own abuse. Despite this, it is satisfying to see Tedros reduced to Mauricio, waiting in the dark for his moment in the spotlight.

Overall, The Idol offers a thought-provoking and controversial conclusion, delving into themes of abuse, manipulation, and the complexities of power dynamics. Viewers are left questioning the true nature of Jocelyn’s character and the implications of her actions.
