Destructoid reveals in-depth details about the New Game Plus mode in Final Fantasy XVI

Enter a Whole New World of Final Fantasy XVI

In a recent interview with IGN, Square Enix Director Hiroshi Takai and Combat Director Ryota Suzuki revealed exciting details about the highly-anticipated New Game Plus system for Final Fantasy XVI. Aptly named Final Fantasy Mode, this system promises to revolutionize the gaming experience by introducing new features and challenges. Once you’ve completed the game in either Story Focused or Action Focused mode, you can select New Game + from the title menu screen and embark on the adventure anew in Final Fantasy Mode.

“Replay the game in Final Fantasy mode with all your progress carried over from previous playthroughs. In this mode, the level cap is raised to 100, but be prepared to face much more powerful enemies. To aid you on your journey, the legendary ‘Ultima Weapon’ is available for crafting. Once you start Final Fantasy Mode, switching back to Story or Action Focused mode will not be possible.”

Unleash Your Full Potential with Increased Level Cap and Enhanced Features

In line with most NG+ modes in the genre, when starting a new game in Final Fantasy Mode, your character’s level, items, and money will carry over. However, this time, players will have the opportunity to push their levels further than before, with a new level cap of 100. These level advancements are not just for show; the world of Valisthea undergoes a complete transformation in NG+, with tougher enemies who are also at a higher level.

In the interview, the developers showcased an early zone called Greatwood. In the initial playthrough, the area is infested with level 11 Hornets and features a level 11 mid-boss Wyvern. However, in Final Fantasy Mode, the Greatwood presents a different challenge, populated with level 44 Raptors and guarded by a Chimera as the mid-boss. Our reviewer confirms that this mode offers new enemy placements and increased difficulties, ensuring a fresh and exciting experience with every playthrough.

As you progress through the game again, you’ll obtain many of the same equipment from your previous playthrough. A new synthesis system allows you to combine duplicate pieces of equipment, creating stronger variants. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to craft the highly coveted Ultima Weapon, which is likely to be the most powerful weapon in the game.

It’s refreshing to see Square Enix elevate the NG+ experience to new heights. Traditionally, NG+ modes can feel like a repetitive chore with minimal changes. However, titles like NieR: Automata have shown that it’s possible to offer fresh gameplay and a compelling new story with each subsequent playthrough. If executed correctly, Final Fantasy XVI has the potential to deliver extraordinary replay value with its Final Fantasy Mode.

Prepare to embark on an unforgettable journey when Final Fantasy XVI releases exclusively on PlayStation 5 on June 22.
