Renowned writer J. Michael Straczynski has recently announced his partnership with Dark Horse Comics to create exciting new fictions, unveiled during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

J. Michael Straczynski, known for his work on screen adaptations like Babylon 5, Sense8, Changeling, World War Z, and his contributions to the comic book industry through titles such as Supreme Power, Spider-Man, Superman, Thor, Midnight Nation, Rising Stars, and Resistance, is now set to embark on a journey of crafting fresh narratives for Dark Horse Comics. This announcement came as a delightful surprise during the recent San Diego Comic-Con.

“I am thrilled to join forces with Mike Richardson and Dark Horse for my upcoming creator-owned works spanning graphic novels, miniseries, and ongoing series,” Straczynski expressed. “Mike exemplifies integrity, which is the cornerstone of his company. I am drawn to anyone who encourages me to freely explore my creative ideas.”

Moreover, fans can anticipate the arrival of more superhero comics with a unique twist. JMS hinted, “Although we can’t reveal all the details just yet, I can assure you that we have plenty of exciting projects in the pipeline. Our first endeavor will be an international, geopolitical thriller that seamlessly blends science fiction with the superhero genre in a groundbreaking manner. The story will be grand in scale, featuring global and personal stakes of monumental proportions. Additionally, we will introduce character-focused narratives that challenge traditional superhero tropes, building upon the success of my previous works like Supreme Power, Midnight Nation, and Rising Stars, while pushing boundaries further. Lastly, Dark Horse will publish titles in the contemporary dark fantasy and historical fantasy genres, akin to Neil Gaiman’s Chivalry, presenting stories about compelling characters that are both thought-provoking and enjoyable, without venturing into nihilism or excessive darkness. I am honored to be a part of the creative family at Dark Horse, which includes talented writers, artists, and other individuals who dare to defy conventions.”

Regarding this momentous announcement, Straczynski remarked, “This is the latest major revelation in the lead-up to SDCC. From the announcement of Babylon 5: The Road Home to Captain America, the release of B5 Blu-rays, and other exciting developments, it has been an exhilarating two to three months.” It is worth noting that JMS has recently published his creator-owned titles through AWA Studios, making this partnership with Dark Horse Comics a significant shift in his career direction. He clarified, “Technically, the deal with Dark Horse is not exclusive. Nevertheless, I am more than content to view it as such, given the marvelous environment they provide. Since Marvel does not offer opportunities for creator-owned projects, there are no conflicts. Currently, I am heavily involved in writing for Captain America, working on issues 5 and 6, and I have one final book coming out from AWA, which will mark the completion of my tenure there.”
