The co-creator of The Last of Us TV series, Craig Mazin, has decided to remove his name from the troubled Borderlands movie. According to World of Reel and verified through the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) website, Eli Roth and Joe Crombie (a pseudonym for Mazin) are currently credited as the writers for the film, indicating that Mazin no longer wants to be associated with the project. The film adaptation of the popular Gearbox looter-shooter has encountered numerous issues, with a disappointing test screening in November prompting Lionsgate to order additional work on the movie.
Mazin’s decision to use a pseudonym comes at a time when he is highly sought after in Hollywood. After receiving critical acclaim for his work on HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation and the successful Chernobyl miniseries, Mazin’s reputation is at its peak. It is understandable that he would not want to risk tarnishing his standing by being associated with a troubled production like the Borderlands movie. At one point, Sam Levinson, creator of Euphoria, was also hired to work on the movie.
Production on Borderlands began in 2021 and boasted an impressive cast, including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black. However, there has been a lack of updates since the release of silhouette images of the cast in mid-2021. With the addition of director Tim Miller and writer Zak Olkewicz, a total of seven writers have been involved in revising the script.
The official website for the Borderlands movie still lists Mazin as a writer and Roth as the director, despite Mazin’s decision to distance himself from the project.
According to the official synopsis from Lionsgate, the movie follows Lilith (played by Cate Blanchett), a notorious outlaw who returns to her home planet of Pandora to search for the missing daughter of Atlas, the universe’s most powerful individual. To accomplish this task, Lilith assembles a team of misfits, including Roland, Tiny Tina, and Claptrap, and they must battle aliens, bandits, and psychos before their mission evolves into a world-saving endeavor.
In other news, Mazin’s partner on The Last of Us series, Neil Druckmann, will soon take over as the President of Naughty Dog, the developers of the Uncharted and The Last of Us games. Co-president Evan Wells has decided to retire after 25 years with the company. Wells expressed confidence in Druckmann’s ability to lead the studio and explained that it was the right time to give him and the Studio Leadership Team the opportunity to guide the studio towards a successful future.
As of now, the Borderlands movie does not have a confirmed release date.
