Construction of 100GWh Gigafactory in Tamil Nadu Commences by Ola

Ola, the electric vehicle company, announced the initiation of construction for its impressive 100GWh gigafactory at its manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. The company proudly revealed the installation of the first pillar of its cell factory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu.

For those unfamiliar, a gigafactory serves as a hub for the production of equipment and components related to electrification and decarbonisation technologies.

In February, Ola entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government, committing to investments of Rs. 7,614 crore to manufacture electric cars, two-wheelers, and lithium cell gigafactories in the state.

Spanning over 115 acres, the Ola Gigafactory is set to commence operations in early next year with an initial capacity of 5GWh (Giga Watt hours). The capacity will be gradually scaled up to 100GWh in phases, making the factory one of the largest cell manufacturing facilities globally.

Bhavish Aggarwal, the founder and CEO of Ola, expressed his pride in the company’s accomplishments, stating, “This is a proud moment for us as we installed the first pillar of our gigafactory today. Our gigafactory will be a major milestone in India’s electrification journey, bringing us closer to making India a global EV hub.”

Furthermore, Ola has invested in cell and battery research and development and has established an advanced cell R&D facility in Bengaluru.

As part of the MoU with the state government, Ola plans to establish an electric vehicle hub that will house advanced cell and electric vehicle manufacturing facilities, vendor and supplier parks, and the overall ancillary ecosystem for electric vehicles, all in one location.
