Compulsion Games has announced their latest creation: South of Midnight.
The third-person action adventure game is set in an imaginative world full of magical beings, monsters, and blues-playing skeletons. The protagonist, a young woman named Hazel, is introduced in the game’s debut trailer where she is seen trying to reason with an immortal specter on a dark dock. Hazel is on a mission to track a monster down, or perhaps it is actually hunting her, as the trailer shows. She wields bright threads of magic to combat her foes.
The game is currently under development for Xbox Series X/S and PC, including a Steam release. It will also be available on Game Pass on its launch day. Compulsion Games, the Canadian studio known for developing We Happy Few and Contrast, was acquired by Xbox in 2018.
South of Midnight is set in a fictional town located in the southern region of the United States, and it is infused with magical realism. The game’s creative director, David Sears, referred to it as a “Southern Gothic love letter.”
The game revolves around the magical practice of Weaving, which serves as the central gameplay mechanic for combat and travel throughout the game’s world. Hazel, a “protector” from the small town of Prospero, is responsible for hunting supernatural beings and repairing the rips in reality that are allowing these monsters to enter the world. The monsters are derived from Southern folklore, and music genres like blues, gospel, and folk music play a significant role in the game.
Hazel is a young Black woman, making her a rarity in video game protagonists. Sears acknowledged that “telling the story of a Black woman in this setting creates another level of complexity that the team had to meet with curiosity and empathy. The approach to this had to start by having just proper representation on the team, ensuring that we had Black women and women of color on our narrative team is key for understanding and writing Hazel’s voice”.
