Compulsion Games, the Microsoft-owned studio behind 2018’s “We Happy Few,” announced its latest creation, “South of Midnight,” during Microsoft’s Xbox and Bethesda showcase. This new third-person action-adventure game is set in a magic realist version of the American South and will be available on both Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Game Pass also featuring the title on its day of release. In 2021, Compulsion Games announced that they were working on a darker “southern” gothic title, which can now be identified as “South of Midnight.”
In an official interview published on Xbox Wire, creative director David Sears and narrative producer James Lewis spoke about the studio’s new intellectual property (IP). Sears explained that the game’s concept revolves around the idea that monsters are real and that magic exists in the world. As you move further away from mankind’s influences and towards the wilderness, the world becomes increasingly magical. The game’s backdrop is inspired by Sears’ wanderings around Mississippi’s forgotten farms, abandoned areas, and artefacts from various eras, including doll heads nailed to a tree. Although loosely based in reality, the game’s setting can be described as “weird.”
