If you have free time tomorrow, don’t miss the new BlackBerry release in the United States. It’s not a phone, but a movie based on the book “Losing The Signal” that tells the rise and fall of BlackBerry, starting with their two-way pager that revolutionized the mobile email industry. BlackBerry devices were a must-have for any businessman with their precise input capabilities. However, after the release of the touchscreen iPhone by Steve Jobs in 2007, BlackBerry’s decline began.
The iPhone was everything that BlackBerry wasn’t with its virtual keyboard, internet content focus, and short battery life, but it was new and beautiful. Despite BlackBerry’s attempts to combine the convenience of a touchscreen with their physical QWERTY, the BlackBerry smartphone eventually died and the company pivoted to cybersecurity.
The “BlackBerry” movie opens tomorrow and stars Glenn Howerton and Jay Baruchel as co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis respectively. The movie features quotes from both CEOs that show their lack of concern for the iPhone, a mistake that ultimately led to the downfall of the company.
The BlackBerry story is a lesson that even companies with revolutionary products can become too confident and lose sight of the competition. Although an Android-powered Passport phone would be preferred, the “BlackBerry” movie is a good substitute and opens in the US on May 12th.
