Co-President Neil Druckmann Confirms Naughty Dog’s Departure from Uncharted

According to Neil Druckmann, co-President of Naughty Dog, the development team is ready to move on from the Uncharted series after completing Uncharted 4. In an interview with Buzzfeed, Druckmann expressed his satisfaction with the “very strong ending” of The Last of Us Part II and praised Sony for not pressuring them to create unnecessary sequels. Although it is unclear whether he was referring to just Nathan Drake’s story or the franchise as a whole, Druckmann emphasized that the team is eager to explore new projects. The successful release of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which included Uncharted 4 and the spin-off title centered around Chloe Frazer, further solidified the franchise’s popularity, with over 15 million copies sold on the PS4.

Regarding The Last of Us franchise, Druckmann revealed that the studio’s main focus is currently on the upcoming standalone multiplayer experience, rather than a potential Part 3. This multiplayer game will introduce a new story and cast of characters set in a different city within The Last of Us world. Druckmann emphasized that there is no pressure to decide the future of the series at this time.

Druckmann also expressed his interest in experimenting with minimalist storytelling inspired by FromSoftware’s Elden Ring. He finds joy in games that trust their audience to figure things out and plans to incorporate this style into future projects.

The Last of Us and Uncharted have both gained additional exposure through live-action adaptations. The HBO series adaptation of The Last of Us, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, has received positive attention. Similarly, the Uncharted live-action film, led by Tom Holland, achieved commercial success despite mixed critical reviews.
