In response to inquiries about Cruise’s focus on franchise films rather than venturing into darker projects like Collateral and Magnolia, which received critical acclaim for his exceptional performances, McQuarrie shared that Cruise’s decision was influenced by concerns about declining cinema attendance. Cruise wanted to ensure the success of event movies that could drive box office numbers upward. As evidenced by the achievement of Top Gun: Maverick, this strategy has proven successful. Although Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One didn’t perform as well, McQuarrie attributes it to unfortunate timing rather than the film’s quality.
