CEO of AI startup Anthropic called upon to testify at US Senate hearing on regulation of AI

Anthropic, an artificial intelligence startup, is set to make an appearance at a U.S. Senate hearing on July 25. The hearing, titled “Oversight of AI: Principles for Regulation,” will discuss potential regulations for the rapidly growing technology. CEO Dario Amodei, supported by Alphabet’s Google, will testify alongside computer science professors Yoshua Bengio and Stuart Russell.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, the subcommittee chair, emphasized the importance of addressing the potential threats and risks posed by AI before they become a reality. He stated, “We are on the verge of a new era, with major consequences for workers, consumer privacy, and our society.”

Senator Josh Hawley, the top Republican on the panel, expressed his concern over the potential effects of AI on the nation. He stressed the need for strong protective measures that safeguard consumers, workers, and families from the potential risks associated with unchecked technological development.

In May, President Joe Biden met with the CEOs of leading artificial intelligence companies, including Amodei. During the meeting, he emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of AI products before their deployment.

Separately, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer announced that an upcoming defense bill is expected to include various provisions related to AI. This includes a report on AI regulation in the financial services industry, which leverages AI for fraud prevention and risk management. The report aims to encourage federal financial regulators to adapt to and adopt AI changes that are disrupting the industry.

The bill will also direct government agencies to conduct risk studies on AI, establish an AI “bug bounty” program, and require the development of AI and machine learning tools to effectively employ narrative intelligence technology. This technology will aid in monitoring and assessing information campaigns by delivering comprehensive analysis of narrative themes, language, information patterns, and disinformation networks.

In conclusion, the Senate hearing and proposed legislation reflect the increasing focus on regulating AI technology to address its potential risks and ensure its safe and responsible development.
