Capcom Contemplates Reviving Resident Evil, an Undeniably Worthy Franchise

The Resident Evil games possess a unique and eccentric quality. Even the remakes, which appear more serious, still retain a goofy charm that sets these horror games apart. This is why many of us, as fans, desire to see more remastered versions of the classic Resident Evil games, even beyond the main entries. And it seems that Capcom has taken notice.

Earlier this year, on Tuesday, June 20, Capcom held its 44th annual shareholders meeting. Recently, on Thursday, June 6, the documents from that meeting were made public, including an intriguing question and answer session.

During the Q&A, shareholders inquired about various intellectual properties, but one question stood out in relation to Resident Evil.

“Will you be providing high-end visual remakes of only the main numbered entries in the Resident Evil series?” a shareholder asked. Interestingly, Capcom itself has posed a similar question to Resident Evil fans.

Capcom responded, “We are currently discussing the future expansion of this series in order to make it accessible to a broader audience.” At first glance, this response appears innocuous, but there is more to it than meets the eye.

Since the release of Resident Evil 2 remake in 2019, Capcom has been systematically remaking the classic numbered entries by building upon the mechanics and core gameplay experience of Leon’s adventures in Raccoon City. Naturally, one would assume that Resident Evil 5 and 6 would follow the recent remake of Resident Evil 4. However, the shareholder’s question suggests one game in particular that is in desperate need of a revamp: Resident Evil Code Veronica.

Originally intended as the true Resident Evil 3, this spin-off not only continues Claire Redfield’s quest to find her brother Chris from Resident Evil 2, but it also delves deeply into the backstory of the Ashford family, co-founders of the Umbrella Corporation.

In my opinion, either Resident Evil 5 or Code Veronica would be logical next steps for the remake series. With the release of these remakes, Capcom has been subtly altering and expanding the lore of the Resident Evil universe (which I won’t spoil here), and Code Veronica provides an excellent opportunity to tie everything together.

I believe that games like Resident Evil 5, 6, and Code Veronica will eventually receive the remake treatment, while the first game will intentionally be left in the shadows.

My prediction is that once all the lore has been incorporated into these remakes, Capcom will return to where it all began and deliver the definitive version of a Resident Evil 1 remake that not only surpasses previous attempts, but also directly connects the lore of games like Resident Evil 8 back to its origins.

The Capcom Q&A contains many intriguing insights into the future direction of the developer behind Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Mega Man (via GamesRadar).
