Bungie to Compensate Artist After “Mistakenly” Using Fanart in Destiny 2 Cutscene

Bungie will appropriately credit and compensate an artist whose fanart was mistakenly used in a recently added cutscene in Destiny 2.

Warning: Potential spoilers for Destiny 2 Season of the Deep ahead.

In the latest update to Destiny 2’s Season of the Deep, a significant cutscene was introduced, providing lore enthusiasts with an explanation of the origin of the game’s current major antagonist, the Witness. However, one part of the cutscene featured fanart that was used without permission or acknowledgment of the artist behind it.

As reported by PC Gamer, artist Julian Faylona, also known as ELEMENTJ21, shared a tweet comparing the specific moment from the cutscene with their older fanart. The similarities between the two pieces are evident with the exception of color and slight stylistic differences. PC Gamer reached out to Faylona, who surprisingly had a positive outlook on the situation. Faylona expressed excitement and happiness that their fanart from two years ago, inspired by the Destiny franchise, made it into the cutscene. They even wanted to give a shoutout about it.

Bungie provided a statement to PC Gamer, acknowledging that an external vendor made a mix-up, mistakenly using the fanart as reference, assuming it was official Bungie artwork. Bungie has contacted ELEMENTJ21 to compensate and credit them properly, waiting for the artist’s response to take the necessary steps to rectify the situation.

While it may not be the ideal way to compensate an artist, it’s reassuring to know that Faylona will receive the credit and compensation they deserve for their work.

In August, Destiny 2 fans can look forward to learning about the upcoming expansion, The Final Shape, as it will be showcased.
