Ben Mendelsohn Discusses the Evolution of Talos’ Perception of Nick Fury

In the not-so-distant past, fans eagerly flocked to theaters for the release of “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” The film showcased the thrilling partnership between Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as they joined forces to combat a global threat. However, as the credits rolled on this 2019 blockbuster, audiences were taken aback by a surprising revelation: Nick Fury was actually the Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) in disguise. Fury, occupied with a mission in space, devised a plan to switch places with Talos so that Earth would still have a formidable protector.

Four years later, Talos returns in “Secret Invasion,” a limited series centered around a Skrull conspiracy aimed at dominating the planet. As the aliens, formerly part of Talos’ community, attempt to remove humans in power, he feels a sense of responsibility for the ensuing terrorist attacks across different countries. During an interview with Collider, Mendelsohn sheds light on Talos’ experience impersonating Nick Fury and what it means for both characters in the show. Optimistic about the shared journey, the actor remarks on the insights revealed to Talos about Fury’s struggles and true identity. He believes viewers will witness the growth and contribution of both characters, distinguishing them from their representations in traditional works.

The consequences of this reveal took a darker turn than expected. Fury’s absence during Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe left Earth in disarray, lacking an official Avengers team to safeguard the world. In the ensuing power vacuum following the battle against Thanos (Josh Brolin), numerous nefarious corporations exploited the situation. However, Fury’s return isn’t a triumphant one; instead, he finds himself embroiled in conflicts with his former allies, striving to prove his worth before retirement.

Meanwhile, Fury must gather his strength to confront Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) and his plans for revenge. With an army of shape-shifters at Gravik’s disposal, Fury can never be certain who his next assailant might be. While Talos and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) stand by his side, this emotional trial presents a formidable challenge for someone who once held immense influence within the MCU.

To gain further insights, you can watch the complete interview with Mendelsohn below before the series premieres on June 21.
