Baldur’s Gate 3 Introduces Dark Origins and Surprising Bear Romance

Experience a Captivating Romance in Baldur’s Gate 3

In less than a month, Baldur’s Gate 3 will finally launch on PC, and to celebrate this highly anticipated release, Larian Studios recently hosted a Panel From Hell. During the panel, they unveiled a new Origin character with a unique playstyle, shared exciting gameplay details, and even revealed a controversial scene involving a Druid.

One of the major highlights from the panel was the introduction of the new Origin character, also referred to as the Dark Urge. This character, much like the Origin characters in Larian’s previous game, Divinity, allows players to choose between a created character and one of the pre-existing party members like Shadowheart or Astarion.

The Dark Urge is a fully customizable Origin character, initially presented as an alabaster dragonborn but capable of being played as anyone. The character’s defining feature is an insatiable desire for bloodshed and chaos. While other characters focus on their everyday concerns, the Dark Urge engages in a battle of suppressing or indulging their impulsive urges. To guide them on this dark journey is a vile servant named Sceleritas Fel, voiced by Brian Bowles, known for his work in Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Additionally, Larian Studios announced the inclusion of more voice talent in Baldur’s Gate 3. Maggie Robertson, famous for her role as Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil Village, will portray Orin the Red, a shapeshifter and one of the central antagonists. This star-studded voice cast also includes Jason Isaacs as Lord Enver Gortash and J.K. Simmons as General Ketheric Thorm.

The anticipation is unbearable

Undoubtedly, the moment that generated the most buzz on social media during the Panel From Hell was the presentation of the romantic scenes in Baldur’s Gate 3, which particularly appealed to fans of BioWare’s games. The first scene showcased a tender and innocent date between Karlach, the newly introduced Barbarian character, and a created character.

The subsequent scene, however, was far from innocent. The player, controlling Astarion, engaged in a romantic encounter with the Druid Halsin in the woods. Things took an unexpected turn when Halsin transformed into a bear. Lead writer Adam Smith humorously addressed this surprising twist: “Have you ever considered the joys and pleasures of sexual congress with a wildshaped Druid? Because at Larian, we have, and ultimately landed on the side of giving the people what they want: tender, consensual romance with a man temporarily transformed into a grizzly bear.”

This raunchy bear scene caused such a sensation that Larian Studios even got banned from TikTok. Nevertheless, the news was met with enthusiastic cheers from the live studio audience.

Putting the wild-shaped romance aside, Larian’s commitment to recreating the tabletop experience is commendable. Even though I have limited experience with Dungeons & Dragons, I can imagine the topic of romantic encounters with Druids in animal forms being discussed with suppressed giggles at gaming tables around the world. In an interview with IGN, Swen Vincke, Larian’s founder and creative director, described the scene as “hilarious.” The cut-away to a squirrel in the video even elicited a good laugh from me.

If Larian’s goal is to capture the limitless possibilities and immersive nature of a tabletop game and translate it into a virtual, pre-designed campaign, the comically bold Druid romance scene in Baldur’s Gate 3 demonstrates their success in achieving that objective.

Experience all this and more when Baldur’s Gate 3 releases on PC on August 3. PS5 players will have their chance for love on September 6.
