Baldur’s Gate 3 Developers Collaborate with Xbox Team to Enable Split-Screen on Series S

Baldur’s Gate 3 is making its way to the Xbox Series X/S, although the exact release date remains uncertain.

In an interview with IGN, Swen Vincke, the CEO of Larian Studios, revealed that the team has encountered difficulties with the Xbox version, causing delays in achieving a simultaneous release on all platforms.

Larian Studios initially aimed to launch Baldur’s Gate 3 simultaneously on all three platforms. However, optimization issues specific to the Xbox Series S have resulted in a setback.

The primary issue revolves around split-screen co-op gameplay. It appears that the Xbox Series S is facing memory constraints, which negatively impact the split-screen feature. Microsoft insists on maintaining parity between the Series S and Xbox Series X, meaning that they require the same features on both consoles.

Consequently, eliminating the split-screen feature exclusively from the Series S while keeping it on the Series X is not a viable option, and Larian Studios prefers to avoid such a compromise.

Vincke stated, “We didn’t plan for this Xbox delay. Our original plan was a simultaneous release. However, given that we have been developing this game for a considerable amount of time, it has become substantial and intricate. The number of possibilities within the game is mind-boggling. When players see everything, they will be amazed. Nevertheless, we are encountering constraints that we must overcome, and this takes time.”

The indefinite delay for the Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 may require Larian Studios to make concessions. Vincke emphasized that compromises are not ideal, and the team is working meticulously to minimize them, prioritizing the quality of the Xbox version despite the extended development period.

To address the challenges, Larian Studios is receiving assistance from the Xbox Advanced Technology Group, which has proven highly valuable to the team.

Vincke acknowledged the help from Microsoft, saying, “We have certainly received support from Microsoft, particularly from the ATG group. They have been fantastic and extremely helpful. Everyone involved wants Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox, including us at Larian Studios. However, we are confronted with the reality that we have developed an immense and intricate game, and our resources are not unlimited.”

He further added, “Testing each platform version is time-consuming, and expanding the various permutations on a specific platform adds complexity. I wish I could assure you that we possess the ability to perform magic and deliver miracles, but unfortunately, we cannot. Nevertheless, I believe it is not a valid reason to withhold a version that is ready for release.”

Vincke revealed that Larian Studios has made the decision to release Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC ahead of schedule, a whole three weeks in advance, and for the PlayStation 5 in September, while the Xbox Series X/S version is still in progress.

When the Xbox version will be ready is uncertain, and Larian Studios hopes for a release this year, although Vincke cannot guarantee it.
