A rare copy of Menace #6 from 1953, featuring the artwork of John Romita, is currently available for auction.

We recently examined Menace #9, a 1953 publication by Marvel Comics (then known as Atlas Comics), which showcased Stan Lee’s classic zombie story “The Walking Dead.” During this pre-Comics Code era, when horror-related content was permissible, Menace, an anthology comic book series, was filled with similar tales. Now, a copy of Menace #6 from 1954 is up for auction through Heritage Auctions. This issue holds significance as it includes stories by both Stan Lee and John Romita.

The lead story in Menace #6, titled “The Graymoor Ghost,” is illustrated by Bill Everett, the creator of Sub-Mariner. Interestingly, all the strips in this issue are credited to Stan Lee as the writer, with each one being drawn by Gene Colan, Russ Heath, and John Romita Sr., who unfortunately passed away recently. This publication features some of Romita’s earliest work, dating back seventy years ago when he was only a few years into his career. With its second-person narrative, the story revolves around a Martian flying saucer invasion of Earth from the perspective of the saucers themselves. The twist ending is something that would be difficult to replicate in today’s Marvel comic books due to its significant impact on the storyline.

The story takes readers on a journey to the future where Earth has been successfully invaded by the flying saucers. Surprisingly, it is revealed that these saucers are actually living organisms that have transformed Earth into a habitable environment for themselves, using humanity as slaves to fulfill their needs.

This intriguing storyline raises the question of whether Al Ewing, a writer known for exploring ancient Marvel Comics continuity for inspiration, should consider incorporating these living Martian flying saucers into his work. Ewing currently writes X-Men Red, which is set on a terraformed Mars and features mutants residing there, such as Storm and her team.
