AT&T-supported Cellular Satellite Firm Successfully Transmits 4G LTE Signal from Outer Space

AST SpaceMobile, a Texas-based company, has successfully transmitted a 4G LTE signal from space to everyday smartphones, according to their recent announcement. The satellite used for this test, BlueWalker 3 (BW3), will now attempt a 5G connection in its next major test, marking a world first for the company.

The testing took place in Hawaii, using AT&T’s spectrum and Nokia RAN technology. The signal was beamed from AST’s satellite in low Earth orbit and reached speeds of up to 10.3Mbps. This speed is sufficient for video streaming, general internet usage, and regular cell phone activities.

This recent test follows AST’s previous achievement in April, where they successfully routed an audio call between a Samsung Galaxy S22 in Texas and an iPhone in Japan using satellite communication.

AST’s BW3 is a massive commercial communication array, covering an area of 693 square feet, equivalent to a two- or three-car garage. It is the largest array ever deployed in low Earth orbit and operates on the same 3GPP standard found in ground-based cell networks.

According to AST’s chairman and CEO, Abel Avellan, this achievement is a significant step towards their goal of providing broadband services to areas where cellular coverage is unreliable or nonexistent. Users will be able to text, make calls, browse the internet, download files, and even stream videos using a signal transmitted from space.
