AMD Unveils Mobile Ryzen 7000 CPUs With AI, Radeon RX 700 GPUs for Laptops at CES 2023

AMD has recently announced a wide range of new CPUs in its latest Ryzen 7000 series, catering to various laptop segments. The company has also revealed its new Radeon RX 7000 series laptop GPUs and introduced the new XDNA architecture for AI processing, which will eventually be integrated into dedicated accelerators, data centers, and consumer-grade PCs. Dr. Lisa Su, the CEO of AMD, delivered the opening keynote at CES 2023, highlighting the evolving computing needs of our world and the increasing role of AI. According to Su, AMD is uniquely positioned to capitalize on these trends.

AMD is asserting its leadership position in thinner, lighter, and more power-efficient laptops. The company has adopted a new product naming convention that incorporates the generation, performance level within a series, and the Zen architecture generation. Power targets are denoted by suffixes, with the U-series designed for thin-and-light laptops running at 15W-28W, the mainstream HS series running at 35W-45W, and the high-performance HX models in gaming and professional laptops running at 55W+.

Among the notable CPU models, the new Ryzen 7040 series stands out as the first to feature integrated Ryzen AI hardware based on the XDNA architecture. AMD claims that this is the world’s first integrated AI engine on an X86 processor. With the ability to handle up to four concurrent AI streams, these new CPUs can effectively multitask AI workloads and offload AI processing from the CPU and GPU, resulting in significant power savings. AMD asserts that its offerings are up to 50 percent more efficient than the integrated Neural Engine of Apple’s M2 SoC.

The introduction of a decoder simplifies the understanding of AMD’s new naming scheme for buyers.

The benefits of this innovation include a significant reduction in the impact of AI workloads on battery life, as well as the ability to keep data on-device rather than relying on cloud services for processing. AMD envisions that AI on the PC will enable improved visual quality in games and the emergence of highly sophisticated non-playing characters. Real-time security and predictive user interface customizations are also expected applications.

Panos Panay, the Microsoft EVP and Chief Product Officer, joined Su on stage during the keynote to discuss leveraging Ryzen AI in the future, as well as current use cases such as real-time noise suppression, portrait blur, eye contact correction, and automatic framing in video calls.

The AMD Ryzen 7040 series is built on the Zen 4 core architecture with integrated RDNA 3 graphics. These CPUs will be manufactured using a 4nm process, and AMD projects a battery life of up to 30 hours. The flagship Ryzen 9 7940HS boasts eight cores, 16 threads, and a boost speed of 5.2GHz. AMD claims it outperforms the Apple M1 Pro by 11-39 percent. The mid-range Ryzen 7 7840HS also offers eight cores, 16 threads, and AMD asserts it is 23-106 percent faster than the Intel Core i7-1280P in content creation workloads. The first laptops featuring the Ryzen 7×40 CPUs are expected to hit the market in March 2023.

Different CPU series within the same generation are designed for different market segments.

Further up the range, the Ryzen 7045 series, based on the Zen 4 architecture, employs the same designs as the desktop Ryzen 7000 CPUs. These CPUs will be manufactured using a 5nm process. The flagship Ryzen 9 7945HX features 16 cores, 32 threads, 80MB total cache memory, a boost speed of 5.4GHz, and a TDP target of 55W+. The Ryzen 9 7845HX comes with 12 cores and 24 threads, while the Ryzen 7 7745HX offers 8 cores and 16 threads. Additionally, there is a Ryzen 5 7645HX with 6 cores and 12 threads. The platform supports DDR5 RAM, PCIe 4.0, and Wi-Fi 6E.

These CPUs are aimed at gamers and creators who require power for multitasking, 4K video editing, and 3D rendering. AMD claims a significant improvement in mobile game performance, delivering up to 18 percent better single-threaded performance and up to 78 percent faster all-thread performance compared to the Ryzen 6900HX in Cinebench. The first laptops featuring the 7045 CPUs are expected to be available in February 2023, with brands like Alienware, Asus, and Lenovo confirmed as early adopters.

At the lower end of the lineup, AMD’s Ryzen 7035 and 7030 series CPUs are based on the Zen 3 architecture, and there is also a new entry-level Ryzen 7020 series based on Zen 2.

AMD has also introduced new GPUs for laptops. The Radeon RX7600M XT and Radeon RX7600M target the gaming segment, while the Radeon RX7700S and RX7600Swere designed for thin-and-light laptops. All four GPUs are based on the RDNA3 architecture and feature 8GB of GDDR6 memory. Laptops from Alienware, Asus, Lenovo, and other OEMs featuring these GPUs will be available for purchase starting February. Later this year, AMD will introduce Smartshift RSR (Radeon Super Resolution), which improves performance by offloading upscaling calculations from the GPU to a Ryzen CPU.
