Activision Blizzard Deal: Microsoft Will Allow Call of Duty to Remain on PlayStation

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer confirmed in a tweet on Sunday that Call of Duty will remain on the PlayStation platform following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. This agreement aims to alleviate concerns about the potential impact on competition.

Microsoft President Brad Smith also addressed the agreement in a tweet, stating, “Even after the deal’s approval, our focus remains on ensuring that Call of Duty is accessible on more platforms and for a wider range of consumers than ever before.”

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had expressed concerns that this acquisition would harm consumers, whether they played games on consoles or had subscriptions, due to Microsoft’s potential to exclude rivals like Sony Group. To address these concerns, Microsoft had previously agreed to license Call of Duty to competitors, including a 10-year contract with Nintendo, contingent upon the merger’s completion.

In January 2022, Microsoft initially announced its bid for Activision in an effort to compete with Tencent and Sony. Both companies had already signed 10-year licensing deals to bring Call of Duty to their gaming platforms if the Activision deal was approved. However, Microsoft has now chosen to allow Call of Duty to remain on PlayStation. Additionally, Spain’s Nware has signed a 10-year agreement to bring Xbox and Activision Blizzard games to their cloud-gaming platform.

It’s worth noting that Brazil, Chile, Serbia, and Saudi Arabia have already given unconditional approval to the deal.
