Sony’s animated sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, has exceeded expectations at the box office, surpassing its predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The film has not only achieved great success in terms of revenue, but it has also been performing like a live-action Marvel movie. Despite facing tough competition, it has reached the impressive milestone of $650 million in global box office earnings after being released for seven weeks.
In the domestic box office, Across the Spider-Verse has grossed $368 million. With an additional $6 million added from this weekend, it is on the verge of surpassing $300 million at the international box office. So far, the movie has accumulated a global total of $663 million. In comparison, Into the Spider-Verse ended its run with $190 million domestically and $384 million worldwide.
Similar to its predecessor, Across the Spider-Verse has garnered positive responses from both audiences and critics. It currently holds an impressive 96% score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, Collider’s Ross Bonaime went as far as calling it “one of the best films of 2023” in his review.
The movie had an outstanding opening with $120 million in June and has maintained its momentum despite facing competition from other major studio films such as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, The Flash, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and even Pixar’s Elemental. It has a good chance of reaching $700 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run. Currently, the film is being screened in over 60 international markets and over 6,000 screens.
