More Than Just Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
The animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is swinging high, having officially surpassed its predecessor in just 12 days. With a global box office total of $390 million through Sunday, it has officially outpaced the lifetime global box office total of 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse. Despite falling behind Transformers: Rise of the Beasts on its inaugural weekend, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse showed significant staying power, delivering unexpected competition to the franchise’s seventh installment.
Raking in an impressive $55.5 million in its second weekend at the domestic box office, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse fell short of the debut weekend of Rise of the Beasts at $60 million. Nevertheless, the film has surpassed $226 million in domestic box office sales. Additionally, with $164.5 million from its international box office sales, China has been the film’s biggest international market. Additions to the top five include the UK with $20.3 million, Mexico with $19.9 million, Australia with $10.9 million, and Brazil with $8 million.
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson, and Kemp Powers, and featuring a star-studded cast including Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac, Shameik Moore, and Daniel Kaluuya, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continues to soar in an industry of unexpected results. The film is now playing in theaters worldwide.
