The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has enjoyed incredible success for a prolonged period, causing it to take it for granted and risking a fall into a complacent trap. Recent issues with franchise installments have raised concerns about this. Being the highest-grossing film series in the world and continually extending that lead has led Kevin Feige and his team to assume massive turnouts regardless of the end product’s quality – which Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania disproved.
That’s where the sequel for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings comes in. Its opening installment rightfully earned its place as one of the MCU’s most well-reviewed origin stories, made Simu Liu an overnight superstar, performed admirably at the box office despite the pandemic, and introduced new world-building elements that were both intriguing and exciting.
However, the downside is that Shang-Chi hit theaters in September 2021, and the follow-up is still a long way off. Director Destin Daniel Cretton is working on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, set for release in May 2025. No projects for the big screen have been announced beyond May 2026, implying there could be at least a five-year gap between installments.
The MCU’s interconnected storytelling has always been one of its strongest suits, but rigidly sticking to the formula can also have its drawbacks, especially when there’s a compelling argument for fast-tracking Shang-Chi 2 right away.
